IRATA International (Industrial Rope Access Association) is an organisation established in the United Kingdom in 1980, with the aim of addressing servicing needs in the offshore Oil & Gas sector. This initiative came about thanks to a group of companies that began using rope access techniques to ensure the safety of workers in the sector.

FAQ

What kind of training does Genesi Academy offer?

Only training related to our specialisms – in other words, what we’ve been doing for decades: specifically, Confined Spaces and Work at Height.

Can training only take place in a classroom?

Certainly, if practical skills are not required; otherwise, a structured training programme with a clear structure tailored to the specific need is necessary.

Is it correct to say confined spaces?

Italian legislation defines them as confined work environments or work environments suspected of contamination, whilst abroad they are generally referred to as confined spaces.

Is the 8-hour training course on the use of 3rd category fall-protection PPE sufficient for all work at height?

No. Annex XXI of Legislative Decree 81/08 specifies the skills required for work at height involving access and positioning using ropes. On average, the 8-hour course qualifies participants to use devices with restraint systems and containment systems, fall arresters and positioning systems; however, when considering use on complex work sites, 8 hours may NOT be sufficient – it all depends on the Risk Assessment carried out by the employer.

Does your Category 3 PPE course for work at height also include the rescue of a person suspended in a harness?

Yes, it covers a basic manoeuvre, and in the ‘advanced’ courses, several types of rescue techniques.

What is the difference between free < 60 cm and > 60 cm?

In both cases, the person is suspended in their harness following a fall caused by a sudden illness, tripping, etc., where it is reasonable to assume there is a fall arrester fitted with an energy absorber. The key difference lies not only in the forces involved (fall factor) but also, and above all, in the possibility of carrying out an immediate rescue (consider, for example, the average length of an arm and therefore whether or not it is possible to reach the injured person immediately).

What does the installer training course allow me to do?

Although there is no regulatory requirement to do so, our course allows you to acquire the status of a qualified installer and maintenance technician for Genesi products, while also providing the appropriate general skills that a good installer must possess.

Is the IRATA International course valid on Italian territory?

Not everyone is aware of the value of an IRATA course, so you might occasionally run into narrow-minded organizations or companies that don’t accept it. To “resolve” this issue, Genesi issues a dual certification with the same course, subject to the favorable opinion of the examining board.

What are the requirements for a course to be valid?

Attendance of at least 90 per cent of the total classroom hours and 100 per cent of the total practical hours; at least 70 per cent of answers correct and no significant discrepancies in the practical test.

Do you also offer courses in languages other than Italian?

On request, we can provide teachers and instructors who speak French and/or English.

How long do the courses last?

All Genesi Academy courses last 3 years, with the exception of lifeguard training courses, which must be renewed annually, and installer courses, which require renewal whenever there are new products or regulatory updates. Additionally, recertifications for courses on the use of insulating APVR (respiratory protective equipment) in accordance with the Ministerial Decree of May 2, 2001, may have different expiration dates.

Recently I took an 8-hour basic course on confined spaces with you. Does this also certify me for work at heights?

It depends. The regulations stipulate that two safety points must always be observed when carrying out work at height using Category 3 PPE; generally, the first point is provided by the operator’s stability and the second by the restraint system or fall arrest system. When the operator needs to be ‘suspended’, the two-point rule must still be observed; first and foremost, two separate anchor points are required, and therefore two distinct safety systems: one for suspension and the other as a ‘back-up’. That said, the technician must also be adequately trained.

How long does a Category 3 textile PPE last?

It depends on several factors, such as the manufacturer’s instructions based on the materials used, and the frequency and nature of use; in all cases, ‘textile’ materials are petroleum-based and, as such, certainly have a predetermined lifespan.

How long can a connector be used?

Provided it is inspected regularly, it can safely be used for as long as its safety features remain effective.
